WHY INTRODUCE A NEW LINE OF FACE PAINTS CALLED RUBY RED?

I recognized there was a large void which could be filled by a good, safe, American-made brand. There was also a need for a vegan line of face paints where animal products like lanolin were not used. In the brand I was previously representing, there were flaws in the product which needed to be corrected which were not being addressed by the manufacturer. Lanolin is a known allergen. We removed it.  I knew I could make a better brand. Previously, I was also limited in the markets and territory I was allowed to sell to. Developing my own brand removed those barriers. There was also a need for someone who was willing to private label. In other words, I allow my paint to be put into packaging for other companies under their name. This move opened up many opportunities. Americans talk “made in America,” and now is their opportunity to put their money where their mouth is in this great new brand.

WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES FACED IN BUILDING A NEW BRAND IN AMERICA?

Ruby Red Paints is my fifth startup company. The first one to three years are always a challenge in building brand identification. My great advantage is that I'm well known and respected in my industry. Because I have always been honest and been known as an ambassador of safe products, my job will be easier this time around. We needed to design new packaging, and that was completed early. We know the tradeshows to go to in order to get the word out, and people are eager to support an American-made brand that is vegan, paraben free, and that has the color range we offer. We are the only major brand that offers pantone color matching and private label. The good news is they now can get a fantastic made in American brand at made in China prices. There are so many advantages to us making this product in the USA. We source all of our ingredients in the USA and all packaging comes from the USA. If the mom or reseller wants safety and ease of use, they have a great place to go to now.

RUBY RED IS BEING MANUFACTURED IN TEXAS IN THE USA. HOW WILL THIS BE GOOD FOR NORTH AMERICA?

One does not have to look far to hear horror stories about quality issues from factories in China. We purchase from American suppliers to allow greater reliability in the quality stream of ingredients and packaging components. This also allows for a better flow of the manufacturing cycle. NAFTA provides us the opportunity to sell in the North American market duty free, and that's the world’s largest consumer market for these products. It's great that Texas is centrally located and operating in one of the USA’s best economies. This allows us to easily hire and distribute the products quickly to the US market. Our primary target is the mom who wants to paint her own children. The mom wants a safe product that dries quickly and comes off easily when the fun playtime is over. Hearing “made in the USA” and “vegan” gives the mom an extra level of confidence for her children.

PARENTS, PARTICULARLY PARENTS OF VERY YOUNG CHILDREN WANT SAFETY FIRST FOR THEIR FACE PAINTS. IS THIS PRODUCT SAFE FOR THE VERY YOUNG?

Ruby Red Paints comes with full testing documentation with a child toy safety rating. They can be used on children of any age. You will find the smaller kits state, “Not to be used on children under the age of three without adult supervision because some parts pose a choking hazard.” That instruction speaks for itself. However, with adult supervision and some common sense, even younger children can be face painted safely. There are other risks and factors that should be considered. If you have a wiggly two-year-old, he or she might not be of the age or maturity to sit still enough to be painted. If children are wiggly, there is always the risk that the artist might poke them in the eye with the brush. Any child who is willing to stay still during the painting process would be safe to face paint. As an example: multiple cruise lines only allow Ruby Red face paints on their cruise lines. They want no issues on allergic reactions. Also when the child goes back to the cabin and gets the face paints on their towels, they want to make sure it is easy to remove. They do not want the China brands that stain the skin and will be there for days. The mom wants safe and easy-on, easy-off.

One should never attempt to face paint a child that does not want to be painted. Many children under the age of three are more than capable of sitting still for the painting process. The artist is a big part of this. If she talks to the child and tells him what she will be doing beforehand and what she is doing as she paints, it calms the child, and he is more likely to sit still.

Be careful, as all brands are not the same. You can currently go to major party stores to find this is true. On the "made in China" packaging, it will boldly say, “Do not use red, orange, yellow, or purple near the eyes. Do not use blue, green, or purple near the lips. Do not use on children under the age of eight.” Be aware of the brand you purchase and the suggested age range for its use. Ruby Red is built on safety. Use it on your children.

RUBY RED IS A VEGAN PRODUCT THAT IS HYPOALLERGENIC. IT CONTAINS NO LANOLIN, PARABENS, NUTS, GLUTEN, ANIMAL BY PRODUCTS, FRAGRANCE OR LATEX. HOW DOES THIS MAKE IT THE SAFEST FACE PAINT IN THE WORLD?

In order to make the vegan claim, we must not use any ingredients in the formulation that come from animals. Many other major face paint brands use lanolin, which comes from sheep. The use of lanolin can increase the risk of an allergic reaction. Lanolin is a known allergen. We removed it and replaced it with non-animal ingredients that allow the face paints to be soft and flexible on the skin.

The industry trend over the last thirty years has also been to remove paraben ingredients as part of the preservative system. With a simple internet search on safety and parabens, you'll find lots of controversy over the use of parabens in cosmetics. Paraben use, particularly for women, has been linked to serious health issues (cancer). Google it and you will find much on this serious issue. We removed the paraben ingredients and replaced them with a robust, state-of-the-art preservative system. Because most artists use the same product on multiple children, they really want a good preservative system, which Ruby Red has. When possible, one should avoid any product with any paraben preservative in them. If you look at the ingredient list you might find methyl paraben, butyl paraben or propyl paraben. Those ingredients should be avoided.

We worked with PHD cosmetic chemists to develop the Ruby Red brand. The term “hypoallergenic” is a marketing term applied to cosmetics. Basically it means that when you use the product as intended, it is highly unlikely that there will be any sign of an allergic reaction. While NO BRAND can claim that it will never cause a reaction, we have literally done every possible thing we can do to minimize any risk. We literally set the new standard for safety in face paints, and that can be seen by the ingredients we use and the steps we have taken to offer a child-safe, family-friendly product.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF RUBY RED?

Ruby Red is considered to be a cake form, water-activated product. In other words, when you first buy it, it is a semisolid. If pressed, you can slightly press your finger into the product. In order to use it, you add a few drops of water to the cake with your sponge or brush and mix. With a little mixing, you'll get a nice, creamy mix of color. For the sponge, you can smear the paint on the face for color coverage and then pat with the sponge in order to get a great, opaque base on any complexion. If it's mixed properly with the use of a good artist’s brush, you'll get a great line to add detail to your design. In both cases, if applied properly, the paint will dry to the touch in under a minute and can be worn all day.

You can remove the paint with mild soap and water. Our paints are heavy in pigment content and have wax and other binders to hold them together and provide easy application. A small 18ml cake will easily paint over 100 full faces, so it goes a long way. This adds to the value of a painter's purchase.

One cannot get bullet proof and easy-off. Our paints need friction and water for removal. They dry to the touch in a minute, but if a child goes into the hot bouncy house and perspires, the paint will be moisturized, and if the child rubs it, it will smear. Children must be told to not touch their face until it fully dries again. If one is using Ruby Red as theatrical paint under hot lights, he can put a barrier spray over the top. This method allows a person to go into water and not affect the face painting. This is not recommended for children as you need special removers. The bottom line is that Ruby Red is designed for the mom and children to maximize the easy-on, easy-off properties.

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE COLOR RANGE, THE SIZES AND THE PANTONE COLOR MATCHING.

Ruby Red Paints has a color spectrum of over one hundred colors. No other manufacturer in the world offers such a great range of colors. You can tell us the pantone color number and we can tell you the color closest to that color.

We also pantone color match for a fee with minimums. We are already doing this to meet the sports face painting needs for the fan. For the sports market, we already offer over 400 color matches. When we make colors for a specific college or sports team, clients want their team color matched exactly. We can do this. We just launched a new color range that is considered UV reactive. This means it shows up well under a black light. Our brand, unlike others, only uses pigments that are fully FDA compliant for use in cosmetics. The consumer should be very careful around other brands. The majority by far are using art pigments that are not meant for use on skin and come with the warning "for hair and special effects only". They are not meant for use on skin. All of our UV products are safe as a cosmetic. We will offer our colors in 2ml, 18ml and 75ml sizes based on demand.

I HAVE SEEN AT OUR LOCAL WELL KNOWN PARTY STORE CHAIN SOME SCAREY CLAIMS ON THE PACKAGING. IT SAYS "DO NOT USE RED, YELLOW, ORANGE OR PURPLE NEAR THE EYES, DO NOT USE BLUE, GREEN OR PURPLE NEAR THE LIPS AND DO NOT USE ON CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 8." THAT IS NOT COMFORTING. IS RUBY RED SAFE FOR CHILDREN?

Some pigments, as determined by the FDA, should not be used in high percentages on various parts of the body. The quantity levels of those pigments in Ruby Red fall below the need for concern. We advise to not use the paints in the immediate eye area. Technically, this is the fleshy moist part of the eye and this applies to all color cosmetic pigments of any brand. Other than that, Ruby Red colors may be used anywhere on the body. Remember that our focus is to offer face painters the world’s safest product line. It is also important to note that we have no animal products, parabens, nut, gluten, fragrance, or latex ingredients in the formulation. Even for the most sensitive, Ruby Red should be the brand of choice for face painting.

It is important to know that ALL COSMETICS on rare occasion can cause an allergic reaction. If a parent has a child who has had serious allergic reaction issues, we suggest a patch test on the sensitive skin on the inside of the elbow. Paint a one by two inch stripe on the inside of the elbow and allow it to stay there for thirty minutes. Remove it with only water and a wash cloth. If there is no reaction, you should be able to safely use the product and test it on a larger area. We know of no allergic reactions with Ruby Red products. All of our ingredients are purchased in the USA and meet FDA cosmetic guidelines. For more on safety you should read www.rubyredpaint.com/safety.htm One should be particularly careful about neon or dayglow colors. Most brands are not using FDA compliant pigments for their dayglow colors and should be avoided. Ruby Red Paints only use ingredients that are fully compliant for use in the cosmetic industry. In independent studies it is reported that 95% of allergic reactions come from made in China face paints. That is saying something because the greater share of face paints come from the UK, Europe or the USA. There is merit to the old cliché "you get what you pay for". For pennies more, you can buy the safest, made right here in Texas.

OTHER BRANDS OFTEN HAVE PROBLEM WITH CRACKED OR BROKEN CONTAINERS. WHAT ABOUT THIS BRAND?

With all major brands there are issues with packaging when styrene is used in the plastic. Over time, there is a standard ingredient that makes styrene brittle. There is no styrene in Ruby Red containers which are made from polypropylene, the industry standard for foods and cosmetic packaging. One nice property of polypropylene is that it is flexible, offers a nice, air tight closure, and is virtually impossible to break. Breakage will not be an issue with Ruby Red containers. Our packaging is also sourced in the United States.

I SAW THAT YOU PLAN TO PRIVATE LABEL. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

“Private label” is a term that describes the common concept of having one brand that might actually be sold under different companies' labels. This is a common process with manufacturers. The larger retail outlets often like to carry items under their own label since this promotes their overall brand. We want to be able to fill the volume demand of these customers when this makes sense. Unless you were very familiar with the brand, you might not realize that brand XYZ was actually Ruby Red. This logic offers the economy of scale. It allows everyone’s price to come down when we sell to the public, but also allows lower manufacturing costs of high volume sales. We are already selling to top tier art and craft stores with our face paints in their package. You will find our face paints sold under many different names on ecommerce sites like Amazon and Wayfair. When buying in volume, we are the go to for private label for both cost and quality.

You might find some of these resellers who might want their brand to be cheaper or higher valued. Face paint formulas can be adjusted to fill that need. Think of the Toyota/Lexus concept, only in terms of face paints. While we will want a very consistent Ruby Red brand, we might be willing to make the product cheaper for a private label customer to meet his need. That product might have less pigment in it to meet his desired price point. It is no different than the lower priced Toyota which might be built in the factory that also makes the premium Lexus product.

WHERE IS THE NAME RUBY RED PAINTS COME FROM?

We wanted a product name that tied the product back to Texas or the USA. The ruby red grapefruit is the state fruit of Texas. The grapefruit logo will be easily identified and projects the image of safe, yummy and fun. We did a search for domain names for a web site and www.rubyredpaint.com was available. You wonder do we actually have a color in our selection of 100 colors that is ruby red? Well of course we do. It is the nice deep red that is found in the logo.

SPECIFICALLY HOW DOES RUBY RED PAINTS COMPAIR TO THE OTHER MAJOR BRANDS?

Of the known professional brands there are some clear differences. Most of the China made brands have a beeswax or parafin base. We avoid beeswax as this can significantly increase the risk of an allergic reaction. If you look at the brands Snazaroo, Grimas, Kryolan and Paradise our texture or application is closest to Paradise as it has a slightly creamier consistency as compared to the harder formulations. Ruby Red Paints in general are bolder on the skin as the colored pigment content is noticeably higher that other brands. No matter what color you use, you should get great coverage on the lightest or darkest complexion. Our black for example is as dark and bold as any on the market. The difference is our black does not stain the skin. One drop of shampoo and some water will take off any of our colors. The mom with love our paints for their children as no brand is easier to apply and easier to remove at the end of the day. The professional will love Ruby Red Paints because of their great, bold colors and they blend easily. You simply will not get a better base when you couple our face paints with the use of the proper sponge. If you are using an artist quality brush you will be able to create great brush strokes for your designs. Amusement parks, cruise ships and the like love our brand because they know they are getting the safety of an American made brand. They will not have any issues with paint smearing on the surface of their equipment. The hospitals and like locations will love Ruby Red Paints because no brand has a safer preservative system. The paraben free preservatives prevent bacteria growth in the paints and make it safe for use from child to child. If you are an animal lover you will love the fact that no animal products, like lanolin, are used in the formulation and our products are not tested on animals. We are truly a vegan brand.
